Barriers to Exercise: Being overweight

Being bigger is a massive barrier to seeking help and getting fit. When you are overweight, I know I've been there, the thought of joining a gym or fitness class can be extremely daunting. Thoughts of looking inadequate (or whatever negative word you put to yourself) in front of others is highly likely to put you off in going in the first place. Being big and exercising is HARD WORK - Carrying and moving those extra kilograms and doing a workout is tiring. The first steps are the hardest. One of the first steps is getting mobile and loosening off that body that may have done very little in years. Moving and Static stretching in standing, seated and lying will help. 15-30 minutes walking a day will invigorate the mind and body. Gradually increase time, speed or distance. You are moving the body, burning calories, building strength and relieving stress. Adding additional workouts such as weight training, jogging or cycling then become easier. A nutritious diet will also reap benefits and give you more energy.
