Pelvic Floor Statistics- Let’s improve the numbers.

In the UK pelvic health dysfunction problems are common but considered normal. In France however the attitude to pelvic floor health is completely different with each woman seeing a specialist women’s health physiotherapist at least 6 times after each birth. In the UK there is a massive underfunding of specialist pelvic health physios on the NHS and knowledge and understanding of pelvic floor conditions amongst the general population and even healthcare professionals is outdated or only partially correct. The general advice given by GP’s for pelvic floor problems is to do “pelvic floor exercises” but exercises on their own are not enough and are often taught incorrectly.

Statistics on pelvic issues

Women

🔹Half of women report urinary leakage. Leaks are common: about 1 in 2 women experience urinary incontinence at some point in their life.

🔹Leakage becomes more common in menopause due to aging, loss of oestrogen and loss of muscle tone

🔹On average it takes a women 7 years to seek help.

🔹75% of women who had incontinence 3 months after  pregnancy are still incontinent 12 years later.

🔹Only 36% of woman who suffer with urinary incontinence exercise their pelvic floor. Less than half of that 36% know how to do it property.

🔹Of those women suffering with hypertonic (tight) pelvic floor  standard pelvic floor exercises may make symptoms of leakage and pain worse. A balanced approach to pelvic floor training needs to be considered in these cases.

🔹50% of women over the age of 50 have vaginal prolapse. Many of these women do not know strategies prevent the worsening of symptoms.

Men

🔹1 in 4 men suffer from urinary leakage—a higher figure than some earlier estimates. Men who have had  prostate, bladder or bowel surgery are highly likely to experience of bladder leakage.

🔹Men are less likely to seek help for pelvic floor issues. Men, particularly those who take part in regular sport, can suffer hypertonic pelvic floor and can suffer with similar problems to women including: leakage, back pain, painful sex, trouble emptying bladder or bowels.

Bowel Leakage

🔹Bowel leakage is more common than many believe—across all ages and stages.

🔹Around 8% of adults globally experience fecal incontinence. Older adults (60+) are particularly at risk, with prevalence rising to 9.3%.

🔹In nursing homes, the rate is much higher: 45–47% of residents experience bowel incontinence

🔹25% of women reported anal incontinence during late pregnancy.

At 6 months, 1 year, and even 6 years postpartum, 14%, 13%, and 14%, respectively, still had symptoms

🔹Due to the embarrassing nature it is likely that this issue is underreported.

🔹Issues are often caused by lifestyle as well as pelvic dysfunction. Symptoms can be resolved with correct pelvic floor exercises involving sphincter control in addition to a holistic approach to pelvic health.

🔸Pelvic floor problems, Leakage, Bowel issues can often start in childhood and continue into adulthood.

🔸1 in 10 children aged 5–16 have some kind of bladder or bowel problem.

🔸Constipation is the most common bowel problem, affecting up to 30% of children at some point.

🔸By the teenage years, around 1 in 20 still experience bladder control issues.

Financial Burden

🔹Women in the UK regularly spend between £400-1500 per year on pelvic floor products—such as pads, liners, underwear, and washing detergents .

🔹Urinary incontinence products are not available on the NHS.

🔹Urinary incontinence costs the NHS £26 million per year.

🔹World Continence Week (led by The Urology Foundation in the UK) highlights that 14 million people face bladder problems—equating to roughly 1 in 5 of the population.

🔹Big pharma and industry make multi billions of  from incontinence products. Advice by these companies are very limited as they have no inclination for people to want to improve their condition.
