Staying consistent with exercise when life gets messy
I’ve had this conversation with several members since the new year. People who, for very real life reasons, haven’t exercised as much as they’d hoped. And honestly? I get it.
Life takes over. Family commitments, illness, work pressures — they all pull us in different directions. Fitness is often the first thing to drop. But the truth is, movement needs to sit higher on the priority list for long-term mental and physical wellbeing.
Exercise doesn’t have to mean attending a class. Fifteen minutes of walking, stretching, or gentle movement is achievable. The challenge is that when the time comes, we’re exhausted… or distracted… or both.
When I speak to those who attend consistently, a clear pattern shows up:
• They schedule time just for themselves
• They book classes in advance
• They protect that time — they don’t cancel for last-minute plans
• They plan childcare or support ahead of time
• Sometimes children sit to the side — and that’s absolutely okay
Illness is different. Rest may be needed. But with permission from a medical professional, gentle stretching or mobility can still support recovery.
Caring for poorly relatives brings its own challenges. But to care well, you have to care for yourself too. Movement can release tension, clear your head, and give you the energy to keep going.
Exercise isn’t just a hobby. It’s healthcare.
Can’t make it to class?
• Go for a walk
• Put music on and dance
• Stretch for 10 minutes before bed
Small, consistent movement matters far more than perfection.
Your health is worth protecting — especially when life feels chaotic.
